The Development and Communications Director (D&C Director) works in collaboration with the Executive Director, the Fund Development Committee of the board, and other staff to support and implement the foundation’s strategic direction, consistent with the mission. The D&C Director is responsible for the overall fund development strategies of the Third Wave Foundation. This includes the conceptualization and execution of various fundraising and communications approaches, primarily focusing on foundations and individual donors. The D&C Director reports directly to the Executive Director, supervises two development staff, and works closely with the Board of Directors and program staff. This position has tremendous growth, learning potential, and opportunity to engage with feminist issues, philanthropy, and other non-profit organizations.
Responsibilities
Planning:
- Develop the organization’s fundraising & communications goals and strategies
- Produce yearly development and communications work plans with other department staff members
- Oversight of prospecting for new donors (both individual and institutional funders)
- Forecast and evaluate the potential of fundraising campaigns and activities
- Work with the ED and D&C staff to create and manage budgets; work with the Operations Officer and ED on a quarterly basis to monitor income and cash flow
- Designing, launching, executing fundraising & communications strategies for a multi-year development campaign
Management:
- Hire, support, and supervise D&C staff; ensure staff members are engaged in program and organizational development work; guide staff on professional development opportunities
- Manage external consultant contracts and relationships related to the D&C work plan
- Oversight of organization’s short-term and long-term fundraising goals, including management of annual fundraising strategies
- Direct and support the fundraising activities of the board of directors, with support from D&C Staff
- Oversight of D&C department’s infrastructure, database systems, and all external correspondence with donors
- Direct the planning and execution of special events
- Work with the Development team to develop strategies for engaging existing institutional funders and generating new support
- Review and edit grant proposals before they go out; meet with the development team regularly to monitor progress on receiving new grants
External:
- Represent Third Wave Foundation at conferences and meetings
- Attend donor meetings with Executive Director, program staff and/or board of directors
Skills
The ideal candidate must possess excellent communications, interpersonal and analytical skills. The candidate will have a strong work ethic and the capacity to meet and advance Third Wave’s strategic organizational priorities and fundraising priorities. The candidate will have the ability to work with individuals from a broad array of class, ethnic, sexual orientation, gender identity, and other backgrounds.
Qualifications
- Experience in a range of development activities, including major gifts, special events, and grant writing. Candidates must have fundraising experience to be considered for this position.
- Planning, management and fundraising skills, and success working with a comprehensive development program
- Prior experience with managing at least one full-time staff member for a minimum of 1-year
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and written skills
- Experience managing or working with multiple fundraising vehicles
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and establish priorities and procedures
- Must be willing to travel and work some weeknights and weekends
- Should have demonstrated commitment to social justice and feminist issues; knowledge of youth-led organizing a plus
